More and more high-rise buildings are built nowadays, especially in Asia. Designing elevator systems for such buildings is a challenging task. Drive and linear guiding are in focus of interest here. Conventional bearing systems cause friction and thereby a braking force contrary to the driving force. Using wear- and lubricant free electromagnetic guides, instead of slide or roller guides improves the efficiency of the system. The main advantages of electromagnetic bearing are the possibility to control the ride comfort by adjusting the damping rate of the guiding system and the reduced accoustic noise due to the absence of friction. Furthermore it is possible that elevator cars can change the shaft (Paternoster principle).
