The advantage of high-speed motors compared to conventional drives lies in their small dimensions and high power density. On the other hand, increased bearing load is unfavorable, limiting the achievable rotational speed and durability. To meet these challenges, a PMSM with rated values of 100.000 1/min at 10kW shaft power has been designed, allowing wearless operation by using permanent magnetic radial- and electromagnetic axial bearings. Due to the application of a massive titanium rotor with buried permanent magnets in conjunction with an air gap winding, the attraction forces between stator and rotor and consequently bearings’ dimensions are minimised.
