Solid rotors of salient pole synchronous generators in the large power range expose eddy current losses on the surface of the rotor pole shoes and constructive countermeasures are necessary to decrease these Joule losses. Realizing a cost effective manufacturing process while preserving the net power of the generator and minimizing the eddy current losses at the same time is a multi objective optimization process. Besides the multi objective optimization a considerable computational effort is necessary to numerically calculate the three dimensional eddy-current problem due to the fact that the eddy current skin depth differs by orders of magnitude from the geometrical extensions of the generator. Within this research topic the modeling, the parallelization of the Finite Element problem solver and the optimization of the rotor geometry are of main interest.
