For salient-pole permanent magnet synchronous machines the operating points are usually chosen to minimize the copper losses. An investigation on specific field weakening in order to reduce the iron losses and thus minimizing the overall losses in the machine was conducted. By applying an iron loss model developed at the IEM on finite element simulations the effect of additional field weakening on the iron losses was analyzed. Measurements on a test bench verified the loss minimization predicted in the simulation results.
