The post graduate program mobilEM, which is funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), is researching a range-extender for a hybrid vehicle based on a free piston linear generator. The unique advantage of the free piston engine compared to others is the non-existence of a crankshaft which restricts the motion of pistons. This give the engine some characteristics, such as high efficiency, variable stroke length and a requirement of the piston motion control. The potential of the range-extender has been verified by the system simulation. The output power range of the linear generator is determined by driving cycles and size of a battery and the generator design criteria can be revealed based on the overall consideration of the achieved results.
