In cooperation with four other institutes of the RWTH Aachen University, a multi-physical simulation platform has been developed as part of the ERS Boostfund project “Fundamentals of Physical Loss Modeling for Mobile Machinery”, funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. This model has been used to compare the fuel consumptions of both a conventional and a series-hybrid excavator. The reduction of fuel consumption by the hybrid excavator with electrified slewing drive is approximately 5.5 %. Both electrical machines of the excavator can be scaled automatically by an algorithm in order to allow the simulation of other hybridization concepts with different mechanical requirements.
