Development and Validationof a High-Performance Fuel Cell Drivetrainfor Hybrid EMU Trainsets
In Germany, about 50 % of the rail network is not electrified. These routes are mostly driven by diesel-electric trains, DMU for short. Due to specifications and requirements, emission-free electric multiple units, EMU for short, will replace the diesel- electric trains in the near future. The electrification of the routes is, however, time-consuming and associated with high investment costs. Thus, the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan sees only the additional electrification of freight corridors and long-haul routes. Therefore, alternative drive train concepts need to be found that are both catenary- and emission-free. The concept of the hybrid electric drivetrain pursued in the project represents the integration deve- lopment of a fuel cell into a traction modular system for rail vehicles. A deep understanding of the components and their interaction in the overall system is necessary. For this purpose, RWTH Aachen University will develop a hardware- in-the-loop test environment into which the real components as well as their models can be integrated, further developed and evaluated.
