Oil cooling improves the power density of the electrical machine, and a combined usage of oils as both lubricant and cooling fluid in the electrical drive system improves the power density further. In this way, the oil in direct contact with the machine components, which may result in more questions. There is already adequate knowledge about lubricants for the gearbox and insulating/cooling oils for the transformers. In comparison, the application of oils in a rotating electrical machine is still in the infancy.

The goal of the project is to understand the oil application in the rotating electrical machine fundamentally. On one hand, it is important to understand that how oils work in the rotating electrical machine; on the other hand, it is also necessary to evaluate the influence of oils on the machine. Currently, a pre-study on influence of oils on the winding insulation system is conducted. In further steps, the stress conditions of the oils in the machine, the material compatibility, material aging as well as the evaluation of oil quality for particular application will be studied in detail.
