Development and Realization of a HiL Test for the Electrical Power Train of an Aircraft

Within the project FVA 30 of the Flugwissenschaftliche Vereinigung Aachen 1920 e.V. a two-seater motor glider with hybrid electric propulsion is developed. "From Aachen to Berlin - faster and more efficient than the automobile" - with this ambitious goal, the advantages of hybrid flight systems are to be demonstrated and at the same time demonstrated in a realistic scenario.

The bachelor thesis of Moritz Scholjegerdes, which was carried out at the IEM, deals with the conceptual design and implementation of a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) test. The test allows the validation of the power train design before it is integrated into the aircraft. The HiL test thus provides insights into power train behavior under realistic operating conditions at an early stage of development. The behavior of the propellers, the aircraft and the batteries is simulated while the inverters, cables, electric engine and cooling can be tested on the test bench. The HiL test was set up and put into operation at the IEM. It was shown that the drive train meets all requirements and is suitable for integration into the aircraft.
