Development of a highly efficient, cost-effective all-wheel-drive system with user-relevant additional functions and substantial CO2 savings

Within the framework of the project AWD2020, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy and the TÜV Rheinland, a cost-effective and highly efficient all-wheel-drive system for the growing volume segment of the B-SUVs will be developed.

The aim is to achieve CO2 savings of up to 15 % compared to conventional all-wheel drive systems by means of additional functions such as electrically assisted sailing, in which the combustion engine can be disengaged and switched off from the main transmission, electric creep and parking, boosting and regenerative braking. Of these, around 10 % savings are achieved by a 48 V auxiliary drive and a further 5 % by optimizing the efficiency of the mechanical components of the powertrain and by switching off the primary transmission.

Based on the 48 V auxiliary drive and vehicle simulation models designed at the IEM, hybrid strategies for efficient vehicle operation are also being developed and evaluated.

A prototype of the electric drive unit is designed, built and measured on the test bench by the IEM.
