The workgroup deals with soft and hard magnetic materials, insulation systems and the electrical machine’s structural dynamic and acoustic behavior. The prediction and reduction of parasitic effects in electrical drives, electromagnetic forces, acoustic emission, manufacturing tolerances, fault diagnosis, life time prediction, partial discharge or material properties are considered in ongoing researches. Specific solutions are worked out depending on the problem and approaches are developed problem-oriented.
In the main focus is the low noise design and construction of electrical machinery, including mechanical components such as transmission. Transient time domain models take care of the power electronics, as well as tolerance afflicted geometries and nonlinear properties of soft magnetic materials.
Another main research topic is the appropriate modeling of loss effects. Special numerical and analytical models are developed for hysteresis effects, eddy current losses and various types of magnetization. Several Epstein-frames and a sheet tester make it possible to characterize soft magnetic materials. Losses occurring at rotating magnetizations can be measured as well. A measurement set-up for magnetostriction phenomena is available.
Within lifetime investigations, comprehensive lifetime models are developed, which allow the calculation of the expected lifetime with a probability for different loads. Therefore, modern measuring devices, a climate chamber, heating ovens and a vibrating table are available. Electrical insulation systems must be qualified for operation on voltage converters. Inverters with fast switching silicon carbide, SiC for short, semiconductors are in focus of current research work.
